Why I play traditional lofted irons

Tis why I like building from scratch....I wish all heads came with a spec sticker, loft, weight, lie and if a wood f.a. IMO iron club heads should too,less the f.a. 🙃

Honest question. What are your irons lofts? Do you have a quality loft/lie gauge or going off of website numbers? Do you have a quality loft/lie machine to be able to adjust loft/lie to the specs that are correct for the golfer.

If not why worry so much about numbers when you play golf. Figure it out on range and just play the game. Most golfers have no idea what their true loft/lie on their clubs are it's more in their heads. That l/l data on sites is just there for +/-.

Too much over thinking here. Either go get them adjusted by a good clubmaker or purchase the higher quality tools and do them yourself and get on with it. This in between banter on a website is yammering and solves nothing.

scotts33 Don't really care much about the lofts myself, more about the lie. If I build/buy and they don't play as I want, I have them adjusted, and have always got better results.
As far as lofts go, I don't like looking down at a 6i @ 24* if it appears straight up/down. It has to have offset for the appearance of 'leaning'....more loft (if that makes any sense to others). The sets with a lot of offset + weak lofts are not good in my hands. If weak lofts and very low offset, I'm good to go.
Guess it's more about my eyes than my mind. And I also do buy heads or clubs that appeal to my eyes, not so much going by any lofts of such.
I've had irons that were stronger lofted by as much as 4* over another set and got same results from same number on the sole. Just got to know your swing and what you are swinging.

There's a reason golf is hard. Choosing clubs makes it that way. 😄

If anyone takes their clubs to have the loft/lie checked there is only 1 question to ask before they begin:
When was the last time you calibrated your machine? The answer in the VAST majority of the time will surprise you if they are telling the truth.

What does it matter?
When I go in to have it done, I do not know the lie angle, but I do know that I want/need it changed a certain direction.
I may have them check 'the number' so I can check it against stated spec by the company. But that number matters not as to what I'm having done.
So, if the machine shows 4* when it's supposed to show zero, and I want the angle changed by 2, the machine, as set, is going to change it exactly 2. Per graduations marks on machine. Those marks have no tolerance. If using anything digital, they surely would.

Besides all that, who here amongst us needs exactly perfect??? Our F'N swings are merely guesses. 🤣

Why does it matter? Because if you check the spec by the company and it shows the standard lie angle is 62 and where you take it they tell you it is 60 how do you know their 60 is correct? I never said perfect so in your belief there is never a reason to check at all. All I can say is that I know for a fact that Ping callibrates their machines every day before they begin so there must be a reason or do you think they do not know what they are doing and are wasting their time

Ping does that because they want them to be what they say they are. But it really does not matter what they are. We use the clubs and if they do not perform as we would like, we will get them taken care of. There is nothing that says a Ping 6i @ (say) 30* will go X number of yards. It is US, that will create a certain distance/performance from each of those irons. Regardless of loft stated.
I do not know what the lofts of any of my irons are, I do not care. I only make sure they are separated by distance gaps and properly fit for lie.
If I find the (distance)gaps are similar in a couple irons, then I will have them all redone, correctly gapped. And I do not care what the * is of each of the irons afterwards. I'll use the club that creates the distance I need for each shot(hopefully so), without ever thinking....'I need my 38* for this'.

The machine does not have to read zero at start, for my needs. It only needs to show any changes.

All that matters to me is if the club hits the ball high enough with my swing speed (traditional lofts), period. If yes, then figure out how far each club goes, go play golf. I don't care what the loft number is. When I play my hickories, I only carry 7 clubs. Modern clubs, 9 or 10 max. Hit the ball in play off the tee, get it on or near the green in regulation, get it in the hole ASAP, have fun.

My only is that if anyone is taking their clubs to either be adjusted or checked they must care about the loft and lie being whatever they want them to be so to do that the machine being used must be accurate and I believe that less than 10% of machines in pro shops, stores, etc. are accurate. Ping will adjust to whatever you want...voice of experience.

As to calibrated l/l machines that's not how you use the ending loft/lie numbers you take the club to a quality loft/lie gauge after bending/adjusting and that's where you check them. Many mid to low dollar L/L machines never are accurate cuz using a bending bar takes experience to know how much effort and jerk you'll need to bend/adjust an iron and that takes years of experience.

How to check dynamic lie angle. Check each iron this way. Just going off some numbers that will supposedly "fit" you is a walk down the trail of ignorance.

I've worked in the Metrology industry for many years now so you would think I would want to measure everything as closely as possible and sometimes the perfectionist in me does want that, but for golf clubs a nice ruler is fine. I need some sort of excuse for when I have the Sherman Tanks 😞
