Hosel to floor depth

I really like how I trimmed my shafts in the Ping g425. I have the new Maltby TS 3.5 and the hosels are significantly shorter. Do I soft step my shaft the same as my ping? Or do I have to take in consideration the bore to ground depth? Thank you.

sloppytypist ping bbgm is 1.25" the maltby is .75".

Given head weights being the same, a shaft that is .5 longer will play softer. That is to say IF you are using the same shafts/same specs shafts.

Whenever I reshaft, I always mark the tip to graphics on the old irons and try to match that to the new irons. In your case, I would soft step the shafts into the Maltbys.

Hi Taki, I mark them as well. I want to recreate the same feel as the soft step in the pings. My question is related to how much longer the ping hosel is, compared to the maltby. Will the shorter maltby hosel, with the same tipping as the ping, create a firmer feel, due to the hosel length differences? thanks, Kevin

sloppytypist Sorry, I reread what I posted and realized it wasn’t clear. Let’s say the graphics are at the 17” mark on my current 5 iron, when I reshaft I try to make the graphics at 17” on my new 5 iron. As was indicated elsewhere, the hosel length has little effect on the stiffness, whereas the BBGM is far more important. From looking at your photo, it should be at least 1 soft step

thank you Pellmell, the ping bbgm is 1.25" the maltby is .75". So the maltby shaft should be a .5" longer than the ping shaft to produce the same feel? thanks

If you like the feel of the first set tip trim the new exactly the same.

It's the BBGM that's interesting (not the hosel length). Find out the two measurements and then go from there. The new Maltby offerings do have a shorter BBGM but I am not sure how that compares to Ping.

As previously said the actual BBGM is the important measurement. I have built a few sets of the new Maltby's and their BBGM is nearly 1/2 inch less than most irons. I did not soft step a couple of sets and they felt firmer to me. I soft stepped others because I was transplanting shafts into 5-P and didn't need the 4i and that worked perfectly. I think 3/8"-1/2" less BBGM can make a difference in feel and I would account for that. 1/4" or less probably doesn't matter.
