The top of the bag

For the last 20+ years the top of my "full" bag has been driver, 4 wood, 7 wood, 4 hybrid, then 5 iron. The 4 wood has mostly been just an alternate tee club and the 7 wood was used as my longest "advance the ball" club. I'm now on the wrong side of 61 and the guys/group I play with still play at 6000-6500 yards. I don't hit the ball as long as I used to so for the most part it's driver all the time. If I come across a hole that's tricked up (creek or desert running across the fairway 200-250 yards out) I would hit a shorter club. Since I'm hitting driver only (for the most part) playing driver, 3 hybrid, 5 hybrid, and 6 iron. I've been using the 3 hybrid and 5 hybrid as my advance the ball clubs and going into greens with irons only. It's really paying off. I've also dropped the lob wedge. My full bag is now only 11 clubs.

azgreg you just described my bag and game almost perfectly. I dropped the 3 wood and love my 7 wood as my main advancer off the fairway. 4,5,6,7 hybrids. 8-sw irons. It definitely helped a bunch. All my friends still pound it and easily reach the par 5s. I stopped trying to hang with them distance wise and got much better results

Depending on your club head speed and playing length that you can consistently impact in center of face that will tell you what types of clubs will "fit" you best. Majority of rec. golfers use not enough loft in fairway woods to launch high enough to carry.

Plus add Wishon hybrids use S2S shaft profile and .335 graphite shafts to launch higher. .370 iron shafts can leave a lot to be desired in hybrids for launch angle and carry height to stop approach shots on green.

Lots fo factors that majority of rec. golfers don't consider and what is really playable. Like this.....

The top of the bag continues to expand as Father Time has his way. I'm north of 73 now and have moved up a set of tees and go Driver,
FW metals at 9w, 11w 13w (instead of hybrids), 8, 9, W, SW, putter. 9 clubs, sometimes the LW makes it 10. Sometimes the 15w (8h) goes in the bag too.

Yes, absolutely. They have a FW shaft (.335) instead of an iron/hybrid shaft (.370). I think it helps the launch. I hit them higher than hybrids.

They are easier to elevate.

Out of the rough, no definitely not as they are bigger/broader and get caught easier. IF you have a good lie or the ball is sitting up you can really hit some rockets with a fwy wood out of the rough. If the ball is sitting down at all forget about it.

I was using 11-12 clubs, but then my home course started changing the tee boxes for the doglegs and longer par 3's more often so I add clubs back in. One of my last rounds I hit the following on 5 doglegs: driver, 3w, driver, 5w and 4/5h. I probably should just take every other iron out....or maybe find a course with fewer dogleg holes.

I started playing longer approaches and par three's differently. Since just about all the trouble is on the sides and behind the green I started playing for the front edge. If I hit it really good I'm on the front edge. If I miss hit it a bit I miss all the trouble around the green and usually leave me a simple chip shot.

azgreg I started playing for the front edge.

That's where I tend to look too. If I'm playing for a score I never club up at my course. I'm honest about my yardages and short at my course isn't usually bad, but long always is.

Except for holes 8 and 10 I don't really need the top of the bag to get on our par 3's, but as I get older (59 now) I will probably need at least a hybrid for all of them and I'm sure my bag will look different. Although by then I hope to be playing at some course NOT in this state lol.

Depends on the weather. Windy… I use more clubs. At my course I use maybe 5-6 clubs. 2 weeks ago though in a scramble at a longer course where it was windy, I actually used all 14 clubs.

The top end of my bag is Driver (12*), 5w-7w-9w-11w. The 11 was new at the beginning of the year, and it's been
one of my most consistent clubs all season. I get 150 yards out of it and hit it HIGH, which helps me hold the greens.
Other years I messed around with various hybrids, but I either couldn't hit them high enough or long enough to
fill a gap in the bag....low swing speed, I imagine. The fw woods are all Acers with senior XCaliber shafts, BTW.

From the 11w, I go 6-GW-SW-LW. Haven't missed the hybrids a bit!!
