jsippy73 Nope.
It is a specialized braking system for the engine, not the wheels. No downshifting, just let off the accelerator (having the jake brake already set). This lets the engine compression 'relax', keeping a more constant speed instead of increasing....that is where the sound comes from......compression release. Keeps from having wheels/brake drums overheat, and sometimes catch fire, which they will do.
re: My mention above of going down the backside of Monteagle (TN).....I had no jake brake, and life was flashing by quickly as I headed for the gravel stopping pit....smoke was so bad I could not even see my trailer!! I walked around waiting for things to cool down, and as I looked over the edge there were several truck carcasses visible wayyyy down there.😲
Luckily, this happened in my much younger years when I had super control of my bowels.
