Harrison shaft help, please

I picked up an old(er) Maltby Aermet driver at PIAS for $6.99 because it had a Harrison Pro 4.5 FL Lite shaft in it. There was no indication of flex on the shaft but the head was 11* loft, so I took a chance that it was an R. Upon removing the crusty old grip I found (as I was hoping) the original stickers from the factory. One indicates "R/F Flex" and above that the number 269 is written in by hand in blue ink. Can someone familiar with Harrison stuff tell me what I've got in terms of flex? And BTW, the club measures a full 46", so I'm thinking it is untipped and not butt trimmed, either.

If Club measured 46" means there were places trimmed off, original shaft length should be 46" plus the Bottom of Bore to Ground Line Measurement. If untrimmed it should measured more than 46". More like close to 47"

Marking of 269 is subject to how it was measured, variation could be as much as 5-15 CPM. Should play like most R flex under normal circumstances.

Have you hit balls with the original set up with the Maltby head ? It should tell you a lot by trying it.

I was told, several years ago, that Harrison measures CPMs starting 5" from the butt end. From all the Harrison shafts I've played/own, I will say the 269 is an "R/F" flex; all of the ones I've had were 269/268. A bit tighter than other brands' "R", but always great playing shafts(for me).

Thanks for the input, gentlemen. I haven't hit it yet, but I am curious about how the head feels, also. 11* is a little high for me and 46" is way too long, but it might be worth a try to learn more about the shaft before installing it in a new head. Thanks again!

Most of the Harrison shafts played true to flex.
I'd be surprised if you won't like the shaft whether it's tipped or not.
Length needs to fall in where you feel comfortable.
I would butt trim with extra inch to your spec. This way you could adjust later by trim off either tip or butt after field test.

Good suggestion, release. I'll probably get along with it just fine untipped, but might as well keep the option open.

I have a mugen black 70 in my geek NB, r flex and it had a sticker on it with high 260's on it....plays true to flex.....good stable shaft.

While we are dredging up older threads, lol..............always, but always spine/FLO the Harrison shafts. They can be some quirky sumbiches, with exceptionally stiff spines!

The old stock had pronounced spin but the couple of the Mugen Blue Proto I have with no pronounced spin ridge.
One is married to SMT db455 and one to Geek DCT.

Love(d) the Harrison line, but they must have had some goofy QC fellas, somewhere along the line. If you grabbed a handful of those Mugens, you'd probably find some with very stiff spines. Their Eclipse is that way, some with 'super' spines, yet some much softer. Sagas were also that way, but mostly on the softer side. iirc, John(golfnut2400 from FGI) actually broke an Eclipse while spining! I've had a couple stiff ones like that(did not break them tho), but also have had some that had 'normal' spines. But they all played like a million bucks....after getting them set right.

(I've yet to spine any shaft that had no detectable spine, even the wound ones. From any company.)

I had a few of the first Accuflex shafts with no perceptable spines. At least not noticeable in my NF2.

I have a Mugen black Proto in a 4 wood untipped and it is a rocket.

I have not used spine method for years, went to FLO. If I'm short on time then I'd flex the shaft by hand with tip on the floor against the foot, that will tell roughly where the shaft wants to go , estimated the spine location ( it' call the foot spine ) by the garage golf club hobbyist. I don't need the confidence of knowing everything was done right, the ball flight will confirm what I required ( as you can see I do not have a demand for high standard these days ).

I might just pull the Mugen proto out to spine it this Winter if I get bored.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I did hit, or at least TRY to hit this club as it was. Horrible sound and lots of sky high slices. So I pulled the shaft with the intention of throwing on an Cobra adapter and giving it a run in my Amp Cell. Par4QC, you are spot on. This thing had the stiffest spine I have ever encountered!! Fearing getting the orientation just a tad off, I decided to put it in the "future projects " box.

Well, when you are old and weak, happiness can be found more easily. Esp. when it comes to golf.

I hit a drive last week that went over 220 yds.. Called the TV station to report it.......they said it was old news......called in by many senior golfers through the years!!!

LOL, mine 3 wood carry is about 200 right now after the injury.
Thought about lifting weights to get some of the strength back, but the occasional pain and soreness told me not to push it too hard. I had three staples to hold the triceps in place, that pulls all the way to my shoulder sometimes.

Haven't done push up or anything for almost 2 years m=now, just chores around the house. My tummy shows .

It also depending on how the shaft act when coming down to the golf ball. A steeper swing plane or flatter plane might need a little adjusting at the beginning. Once I had found the angle I would turn the shaft a few degrees each time after FLO it. I looked at the hand position on the grip and the interaction of the shaft will be returned to the "hit" and the "through" line .
With longer shaft which produced a flatter plane, I turn the shaft a 3 degrees to the right ( clockwise) and the other way when return to a shorter length. I used to apply this to a shaft after finding the spine in the past.

Finding the spine or the directional FLO is a set elements, it has to work with the golfer's swing to maximize the benefit. Because most golfers will not be able to compensate for a static standard.
