I've tested a few and find in no special order Srixon Soft Feel, Callaway SuperSoft and the best cheap ball the Wilson Boost. They are all in the 35 - 50 compression range and though I have no scientific data and this is all anecdotal with my paltry 76 year old ability to compress the ball and going off more "feel"/sound than anything plus the ball performance the lower compression balls seem to smoosh off the face of any club better than high compression plus I have no axes to grind like MGS. For higher compression I have tried ProV1, Oncore Elixr, Snell MTB and 3.0. Vice Pro etc etc.

Is there such a thing as under compressing a ball or over compressing I don't know but I think there is something to those terms.

To compare my driver SS is around 86 - 90 and mid-iron 68 mph and my release early-medium. Transition time with driver 1.4 sec.

As to short iron wedge spin to stop ball I have yet to meet many recreational golfers that really can spin a ball to stop it using a urethane cover. The ball if urethane may not roll out as far but not many possess the skills of a PGA player to stop the ball yes there are a few here and there but not many.

As, I've gotten older these tru-isms for me have become more separated.

To add the Wilson Boost available at Walmart in white has to be the best bargain in golf $10/doz.

I've tried these, and other low compression balls but found they feel too soft, and I always have a loss of distance over other balls I've used. I've never been a fan of that low compression group.

Now, imagine my shock, surprise, etc. after posting about how nice the MaxFli Tri-Fli ball is. And recently finding out it is only 45 compression, after using it for a few years!!

It does not compress...'flatten'... in feel as some of the low ones do. Had I been asked what compression it is, I would have said not lower than 75 as that is what I typically have been using recent years.

The thing is, it is a 3 pc. ball, but not urethane cover. It does not feel hard, nor does the cover scuff/cut readily; it can take a little beating. And pricing is always great, in quantities. (I got 8 doz. @ $12.50/ea.😉)

I will also add that Jake has used them. No problem even at his speed.

Have never played the Boost but hopefully will find one and try. IMO the Super Soft feels much different then the soft feel, noticable to me. Save a few of them for late fall rounds when it's in the 30s otherwise they go to one of my buddies who plays all found balls. I don't care for the feel and occasionally get a super flyer from the fairway or first cut with irons. Ball flies further than normal and no stopping it. I equate this to modern forgiveness (i..e slight mishit) of clubs combined with lower spin./(?) Performs OK everywhere else. Not that this phenomenon doesn't happen with other soft balls but not to the extent that it does with the super soft.

scotts33 Admittedly, not a clue. Never been anywhere with a monitor/other to even know what my speed is. Swing is more like Rahm, Finau, etc.. Not much back any more, and most likely way too fast in transition. Out around 190-200 is good, sometimes lucky and 230-240. Hits with driver rarely off center, and hit up.

Par4QC Yup YMMV with swing technique and stats. On average most don't know and it's more or less anecdotal as is mine. Age and ability to make a full turn (turn-turn) is huge.

I used to always want to see the driver head out of my left eye, over my left shoulder, when I was swinging.
Now I'm lucky to see it with my right eye, at my right shoulder.🤣

Not so sure it's always an 'age' thing though. When I was working, I was limber as a monkey... had to be to do some things I was doing. But after not working, and no real exercise, that's changed considerably. My fault. Not may age's fault. jmo.

Another thought is that I'm not even using that 3rd layer...the core, where it is softest....due to lack of proper compression.

You’ve just described most of the senior players in our club. Maybe a 25* true shoulder turn - just a pick up & slash arm swing. As Rex said, most likely lack of flexibility and activity.

No clue on my speed or transition, but the Callaway Super Soft goes farther than the TF Hammer control for me. Have not tried the Wilson. A good solid drive for me will carry 175 and roll to 185, sometimes 200.

For me the HC Urethane feel "different", (not better or worse )and don't go as far. My older PINGs (ZING2, Rapture V2) hit the ball VERY high and don't release much, so spin/grab on the greens is not something I hope for anyway. I do prefer the smushy feel of low compression. It tricks me into thinking I smashed it. 😉

So our course hasn't even been open a year and we've already collected a shit pot
full of golf balls.All those egg crates are full of like new Pro v's ( people in Texas don't
seem to buy the cheapies very much). I've hit just about every brand you can think of,
even found a ball the other day called 'Stryker'.

What I've found that works best (distance wise) is hitting the center of a square clubface and getting as
much turn as possible. The type/brand of ball doesn't seem to matter all that much. IMO
The older we get (I'm 74) the more limited the turn becomes.....🏌♂

SO I've been working, tinkering around with a simple way to get a bigger backswing/shoulder turn:
If at set up you turn/flare your lead foot, left foot for me "IN" about 20-30° towards the right foot,
you'll be shocked how much farther and easier you can get some lost distance back.
At the same time drop the trail foot back slightly too.

Try it you might like it 'Mikey'!

Are you still able to get through the ball? This setup of yours (I have done at times) may increase backswing but does it not cutoff the follow through? Begs me to ask, what is more important, back or through?

I have a ton of the TF Hammer Controls, but have found I like the Callaway Super Soft better.....I think they're a little
longer for me (although "Long" is a relative term for me anymore ☹). But that really low round I shot the other day
was with the Super Soft, so I guess I'll keep playing them and save the TF's for fall and spring golf.

Yes pretty much,you can always let your lead foot turn a bit like Sheffler does.
The driver is still a work in progress, but with irons I find it so much easier to keep
the shoulders closed and have a more inside club path to be able to hit the back inside part of the ball.

braveheart Backswing is way more important, imo. Once the ball is actually hit, whatever you do after that doesn't matter.

I just don't notice a ton of difference on most balls. I play the ball low on every chip possible so I don't want my ball to check. I hit full shots really high so I get stopping power that way unless the greens are hard as hell.
I "seem" to get more distance with harder balls. Current balls in my rotation Prov1 , ProV1x, TP5X, Vice Pro, Vice Drive, Titleist Velocity , Tit. NXT, Tit. Tour Response. Vastly different balls and I like them all.

Wilson Boost $10 per dozen...best ball for the value but you need to check your ego at the door which most golfers refuse to do. Also, they are only available at WalMart...lose 1 and there goes 85cents, helps speed up play rather then look for a $5 ProV ball. Other balls to try are Seed and Legato. The ProV ball guys should try either of the PXG balls, about $20 cheaper per dozen. I know 4 guys who have made the switch from the ProV to PXG and have not looked back.

Try E9. It's in the 75 compression range, but feels pretty good off everything. It holds greens better than it should. Maple golf has orange balls for under $15.

backinit I have some of those. 1st time I hit one I did the ol' WTF? was that. Must have caught it perfectly as it was the longest hit I'd had in years, center cut also. They are long, carry may be longest I've seen, go straight, but for me they feel just a bit firmer than others I have of same (supposed) compressions. I do still play them occasionally.

Par4QC Yes they are not bad. Definitely doesn't feel like a rock. I was expecting more run out. Maybe a bit firmer than E6 balls. Feels like a damn golf ball I guess!
