Loft and Lie

I was once told by a very very wise man that regardless of where you take your irons to have the loft and lie checked or adjusted the first question you must ask is.....when was the last time you calibrated your machine? Get ready for some very surprising answers, most of which be.."I don't know"

I use a loft lie measuring device that clamps the shaft. Direct reading using a digital caliper. Steel on Steel. I then go to my bending device, lock it in and measure it using its scale. My machine is out about .75 deg. I then bend it the number of deg I want, and recheck in the digital device.

Does it matter when you need to bend 1° upright or 2° weak?

You probably get the same answers when asking when was the last time you calibrated your swing weight scale.

I usually am bending off of factory lie angles. The last time I went to my guy I had him check the clubs before bending to see what the numbers were. They were exactly on the factory specs, so I assume his machine is on spec. No idea when or if he gets it checked.

Correct. Here is what I did. I took 3 Ping irons to 2 Ping dealers and also to the PGA Superstore and Edwin Watts. Every measurement I got was different, maybe not by much but different. I then sent them to Ping and they told me the first thing they do every morning is calibrate their machine. He was willing to bet that some have never calibrated their machine since they got it. Lesson learned

Steve might be able to answer this or other Ping freaks but doesn't Ping still use the rubber mallet to adjust for lie? Do they use a L/L machine or adjust via mallet and measure on L/L gauges?

See at 6:00 mins with mallet and at the end measure with Green machine. Seems Ping does not use L/L machines as we think of them today. Shock the metal and it will retain lie/loft better than bending cast Karsten always said.

When a clubmaker orders from Wishon/Diamond Intl all measurements are done on a Green Machine after adjustments are made.

Not sure about the factory. My local dealer uses a traditional machine. PINGs have so much hosel relief, they're easy to move.

At 1:32 - Cleaning the hosels - So critical and rarely if ever done by the do it yourselfer.
At 8:02 - Thumbing down the acetone rag so it is fresh for each iron. LOVE IT. High volume shop is evident.
At 9:22 - Measuring final grip length - Rare to see the effort in detail. They have set the standard!
At 11:08 - The narrator steps in and fucks it up . That is NOT a "loft and lie" machine!

It has changed so much since I was first there. They are the Kings!

I posted the factory video and how Ping does it. Karsten was of the belief that cast metal has a memory and needs to be shocked with a mallet to stay in place. L/L adjustments to his way of thinking with their cast irons doesn't stay in place with a bending bar. So if you believe that and why wouldn't you as he was the MAN.

I know, I have told some of my clients send them back to Ping if you want that total assurance.

🤔ah, so, I misunderstood this part.
I went out earlier to do some changes, then checked them a bit later and they had moved back.

A mallet, eh? I was using a naked photo of a 90 yr. old woman next to the heads.
