Stableford

While over in the UK, Stableford was the usual scoring system. It differs from the US considerably. But in a good way I think, because it speeds up play.

Eagle = 4 pts
Birdie = 3 pts
Par = 2 pts
Bogey = 1 pt
Double or more = 0 pts

If you miss your bogey putt and you don't stroke on the hole, you pick up the ball and move on.

I really enjoyed this format over there. I think it was one of the things that helped keep rounds under 4 hours. Even tournament rounds.

My group in Florida played this often. We even had 4 man team Stabelfords. Your quota was you handicap index - 36, (10 handicap has a minimum of 26 points), or we just played highest point total wins.

We played Stableford in our Senior Quota Group game (3 times a week). It was modified to Eagle = 6, Birdie = 4, Par = 2, Bogey = 1 and Double = 0.

We picked up after reaching double and to limit sandbagging we changed your quota after every round depending how much you were over or under your quota. If you stayed within 3 of your quota it remained the same.

Couldn’t use handicaps because not everyone had one and it was too easily manipulated.

We also had a minimum quota you couldn’t go below. I think it was ~ 12. So basically you had to be at least a 24 capper to play. It was a $5.00 game plus Greenies. Lots of fun.
