[deleted] My daughter and I were doing this a few years ago after her daughter had a paper to do for school. I gave her information I had from a cousin, but when she came back and told me there was a problem, I went searching also. I did find what she had found. Someone had listed the wrong g/g/g/grandfather. But their list stopped there. We went forward with that guy and that's how we found it to be wrong. We found 2 branches, but can't be sure of which is ours until we find who the g/g/g/ggrandfather was. For that we need to make a trip to a couple courthouses in Ohio and Indiana. Was going to do that when my wife passed away. Maybe some day.
I will say to be careful, if not suspicious of what you sometimes find on the internet sites when doing this. When I found someone that was supposed to be in our line, I would always go forward to see who it led to. A few times the person(s) were not related to me. I would find the entries are done by the 'caretaker' of the site. 1 such caretaker was someone from Russia, living in Alaska!! They were doing random postings at various times with names. Why...???
If I followed the 1 line we were on, I would be part owner of all castles in Scotland!! Clan MacDonald......not a Smith. May still be my line, but until I find certain info on that grandfather, I'm not moving to some dank, dark, dusty house. 😆
