I have a bunch of hybrids and hit them decently. I threw an original great big Bertha Ti heaven wood in the bag Friday after work for a round. Wondering what you folks think about 7 woods in general? Are they basically another 3/4 hybrid? I hit this 30 year old club ok but at the end of the day not sure it’s any better than my hybrid. It was going anywhere from 180 to 200 yards depending on quality of strike. Some were higher than others too. It got me wondering if it’s worth buying a modern 7 wood? This one is in good shape but 30 years old. Technology in newer models, better shafts?

For me it really comes down to which club type I get the most decent strikes from. The longer the shaft, the more I struggle, but I can hit a 21 degree Fw (7w) higher than a 21 degree hybrid. But my misses with hybrid are straighter. It's a conundrum!!

sdandrea1 I hear ya. Kinda my results as well. Not sure it’s worth carrying an extra club at that end of the bag. I may give it another round or two for a better sample size before it gets banished

On my home course, a thinned hybrid down the center of the fairway is way better than a high push or pull with a FW. The latter looks and feels better, but the former helps the score!

bigshank I had a Heaven wood a couple years ago and did not get along with it. Last year I had a 7 wd and it was great....easy to hit, dead straight every time. And longer than my same lofted hybrid. I did get rid of it, but may pick up another for this season. It is an 'extra' club in the bag but I'll most likely need that distance.....I seem to always be at that damn distance.🤨

Just a thought.....iirc, the Heaven wood sole/face is different than a 7 wd..(haven't checked the new ones) Might make a diff for you. It did for me.

sdandrea1 I think Heaven Woods are 5w length as well.

Originally, I think they were to be set at 6/7 wood loft and 5 w length. I've played one in the past
as I never owned a 7w. I'd just grip down on it as needed to hit is different distances. YMMV

sdandrea1 The longer the shaft, the more I struggle

Same here when it comes to this area of the bag this thread happens to be targeting.
Must be why my Apex UW at 21* and 41” length is working so damn good

Interesting topic! Yes I carry and play a 7 wood. For decades it’s been my go to club! Hasn’t mattered what brand Big Bertha-Steelhead, Ping G2, Taylormade RBZ. For some reason, that length and lie angle suits me. 200 yards down the middle. I think sometimes I would be better off teeing off with it and leave the driver out of the bag.
Damn , now y’all had to bring up the topic, I might just put my 9 wood back in bag. I hit it well too! LOL

professor so how much farther do you hit your 3 wood than your 7 wood? I’m going to guess for me it’s about 15-20 yards. I don’t use my 3 wood much. Since I’m not really reaching the par 5s in two anymore a possible swap might not really hurt. Do you hit a 3 hybrid? I’m asking because it seems similar in my limited trial except seems it flies a touch higher than the hybrid. Starting to think 5 wood might be a better plan for me.

Had a 7W as far back as FGI, it was a MacG NVG2 7W. It had an awesome sole design for my swing. (Steep/Negative AOA) Should have kept that club. I love them because of my swing flaw. They launched high and landed softly. Minimal turf interaction because of the sole. See many pros gravitating to 7Ws these days.

I think when you find a shaft that works for your swing, old or not, keep playing it until it stops working. I still have some SKF TT80s in my TM M2s.

I believe that newer clubs have been able to manipulate mass locations in heads with things like Carbon Crowns, weights in the soles, etc. This may or may not help you so YMMV. I'm sure shaft technology has likely improved as well.

So this post probably has not helped much.

One last thing, I'm sure that modern 7Ws likely have longer shafts these days, so they are probably harder to hit that older ones. That's if you struggle to hit longer clubs like me. Anyhow, good luck with the hunt.

sdandrea1 I think Heaven Woods are 5w length as well.

That's something that I liked about older Callaway fairway woods - they would have a few non-standard options in terms of loft and length in addition to all of the standard 3-wood, 5-wood, etc. The HeavenWoods were usually 5-wood length and 7-wood loft, and there were a few models of 4+ woods that were 3-wood loft with a 4- or 5-wood length shaft.

sdandrea1 I think Heaven Woods are 5w length as well.

Yeah, from what I remember the old Callaway Heavenwood was either a 4 or 5 wood length shaft on a 7 wood head. I had one, loved it. It was a higher flighted 5 wood for me.

                    LOL
I hit a low ball flight, particularly with driver and woods. I typically play a 13 degree driver. With a 7 wood I hit a very pleasing and boring flight. I don’t even carry a 3 wood for that reason. It’s very rare to get on a par 5 in two.

                    bigshank
I hit my 7 wood further than a 3. My lowest lofted Hybrid is my 4. If well struck it’s good for 175-180.
Getting older has not helped. LOL

toraider That's if you struggle to hits longer clubs like me.

Hahaha, while in general I do have a bit more difficulty with a longer shaft, for some reason the length of a 7 wood just suits my swing tendencies (or flaws).

MartinD The HeavenWoods were usually 5-wood length and 7-wood loft, and there were a few models of 4+ woods that were 3-wood loft with a 4- or 5-wood length shaft.

                      Well, that’s contradictory. Huh?
