Another interesting idea came to mind last night. When I was with Goodyear (store manager) I had a customer who was retired. He lived most of the year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) in Sun City then rented a dorm room at Utah St University for the Summer. He said the school rented out a bunch of the rooms during the summer to retirees. It made more financial sense for the university to do so instead of paying someone to just maintain the properties.

While it is also a few years away for us, my wife and I have been discussing this very same issue. All 3 of our sons live in NYC area, and are very unlikely to move, so we are likely heading back there. Not looking forward to experiencing winter, crowds, and higher cost of living again, but it's what you do to see your grandkids. Thankfully simulator technology is only improving

I went to college in Maine (Go U Bears), and love it. Even winter wasn't as miserable as it was in Cleveland. But it is soooo long.

azgreg Keeping the family close is always an important thing for many of us. Probably why my parents waited so long to start snowbirding. I'd like to retire someplace else (warmer, less taxes), but I know it will be an issue if I suggest moving too far from Boston where my oldest lives. I'm thinking retirement in 7-9 years (sooner would be better though) and who knows where kids will be then.

azgreg Those are fine if you're going to plop yourself at a campsite and not move. But I'd rather have something detachable so you don't have to haul the whole thing if you're sightseeing, golfing, etc.

azgreg My parents moved to a large over 55 community. They only moved from Long Island to outside of Atlantic City. They did nothing socially on Long Island but when they moved, there were so many activities that they haven’t stopped - golf club, billiards, poker. Plus 1/2 of the community is their age so they have common bonds now. Depending on your personality, I would place something like that above the city.

azgreg My thoughts. Everyone will travel to Orlando, weather is decent and no income tax. However, I went with Las Cruces instead. So close. Now to actually retire. Plan is 1 July.

Similar except we’re retired. Wife’s elderly parents require assistance on a regular basis. We’re between our two favorite travel spots, so that helps.
