I took my old Gargoyle 44 Blues out a few weeks ago and stated wearing them. For the heck of it I looked them up on eBay…. They sell for over $175🙄. Some prices pretty high. They are from the 1990’s. I have a pair of Wire rimmed Oakleys from the same era that sell for $500 now on eBay as well. Crazy…

The thing about Maui Jims is they rip you off with the prescription lenses. They're kinda like PING. My eye doctor / optician sells Maui Jim frames and could put the lenses in. But Maui Jim requires that they put their own lenses in which are more expensive.

I actually wanted the MJ lenses as they are IMO are superior.
I also wanted glass lenses not polycarbonate.

Prior to these MJ I used Oakleys , mainly because I had the Flak 2.0 frames from my non-prescription glasses and only had to order the prescription lenses from Oakley. The lenses alone cost me over $300. I got a lot of use out of them and can still use them for yard work.

I also purchased prescription Oakley's for fishing . Went with the Gascan in polarized. Tgey were cheaper but still over $500

It’s the fact that these 2 pairs of sunglasses are now considered “Vintage “ so the price is 3 times or more than I paid years ago. And the ones I see are used as well

The glasses are considered "vintage" and you're just considered old. Life ain't fair.

My glasses were always 'glass'. A few years ago, I went to get new ones due to losing just a bit of distance sight. I will shock you when I state that it had been 23 years since my last new fitting!! Even the optometrist was shocked. But my prescription had only changed slightly.
Today I am going in, yet again, for another pair of glasses, as I have to do every year. Just got the ones I have in Feb..
'Plastic' just does not hold the 'script, imo, as glass will.
Yes, I do realize age is a factor with diminishing sight, but still.

Drink a 'soda' from a glass bottle then drink one from a plastic. Same soda, much different taste.

I just sold my 2 pair of Pit Boss2 for $500. MSRP when they came out was $600 per.

Par4QC sight. I will shock you when I state that it had been 23 years since my last new fitting!! Even the optometrist was shocked. But my prescription had only changed slightly.

For many as you get older your eyesight can actually get better. Being near sighted I was a -125 and now I’m down to a minus 50.

The down side is for reading is I’m up to a plus 2.00.

Still wearing my Coasta del Mar's from 1990. When I wear them, fishing on a sunny day, my eyes feel better after than they would have had it been gray, bleak, and raining all day. Love 'em!

I can't read all the posts in this thread. The concept of paying hundreds (many hundreds) of dollars on sunglasses is just mind-blowing to me. Even if I had FU money.........

There is really not much of a choice. I have to have prescription sunglasses in order to see and because two of my jobs my work is outside , another I am driving people around I require good lenses to see but also to protect my eyes.

I'm doing 3-4 , 8-10 hour shifts at the course and play 3-5x a week.
When we go fishing we are on the water at least 8 hrs a day. My eyes would be fried without proper glasses.

I looked into laser surgery then I could go back to $200 MJims or as somebody mentioned Costas ( fantastic sunglasses) but almost 10 grand so not really interested.

Maybe you are good wearing your Blue Blockers lol, but you'd be amazed how much less eye strain " good " lenses provide.

$110 in 1990 dollars, for excellent eyewear that lasts 34 years? That’s quite a bargain! Beyond the big physical “systems” as a growing geezer, it’s important to take good care of teeth, eyes and ears.

Weirfan Agree, I too wear prescription sunglasses but have not been willing to pay high prices. In the old days I could only wear the glasses the AF gave me in the jet and did not like carrying many different types of glasses.

I went down to Mexico and found some nice glasses cheaper and lenses work fine. One pair is Ray Bans-look authentic enough but not Ray Ban lenses since they were made there. Cheaper than COSTCO and now dropping COSTCO since the closest place is 53 miles away. SAMS Club appears to be higher cost than COSTCO and I no longer get free glasses from the military after turning 65.

Weirfan Like you and Paul I'm in the same situation. My hope is that if I get cataracts my vision can be corrected enough so that I can get by with cheaters and a $100 pair of sunglasses vs high index progressive clear glasses and sunglasses every 2 years. Yes, I have FSA and HSA funds ( much of that money is my own contributions), but I would rather that be used to help offset the lackluster medical and dental policies that I got last year when we were absorbed into a larger company.

Weirfan I always used to see ads from Montreal for very reasonable pricing on Lazer correction. That lead my to think that Canada was the place to go to get it done.
