CallMeAl OK, all you guys who live in the snowbelt, do you undercoat? If so, what do you use? Do you have it done or self apply? Given I have Dad's Truck now, and it stays outside, I'd like to undercoat before the weather gets too bad. Any suggestions?
jsippy73 CallMeAl Used motor oil mixed with chainsaw bar oil. I have done it myself but my neighbor has a 4 post car lift that we roll outside and put down plastic sheeting.
Par4QC CallMeAl If it was me, my truck, and I had other vehicles to use, I'd just store it inside for winter. I'm not so sure that the spray solution they use on roads prior to snow cannot eat thru kryptonite! My (Ford F150)truck went from nice to total shit in just 2 winters here. I'd be going to work soon after they had just done the spray and roads were still wet from it. Then coming home there was tons of salt put down. Frame, bed, just everything ate up. Basically sold it for scrap.
darpar Back in the day when I worked at a Buick dealership, we used stuff that looked and probably was tar. Living in So.Cal undercoating was more for sound deadening than anything else. Now more of a rubberized polymer is used, but still pretty messy to apply. Plus everywhere you want under coat, all that area needs to be pressure washed and cleaned thoroughly so the undercoat will adhere.
[deleted] jsippy73 I've sprayed used motor oil thinned a little with diesel fuel. I would think oil mixed with bar and chain oil would be too thick to spray.
jsippy73 [deleted] Just need the right nozzel. My neighbor uses an airless paint slayer that you can put a can under. It does a great job, and fast.
Ack8236 Had it done through the dealership when I bought my truck. I believe they used the Zeibart place across the street. They called the undercoating the Michigan Package.😉
CallMeAl Anybody ever use Fluid Film or Waxoyl? I called Zeibart, but the want almost $500 and it has to be repeated annually to keep the warranty. No Thanks...
Rickochet I bought a 2009 Toyota Tacoma which is the Gen 2 of the Taco. Many of these, primarily ones on the west coast started getting frame rusting. Toyota did a recall for all Gen2's for inspection and do an under coating. They kept my truck for a whole week and provided me with a rental. I don't know what they used but it was super thick and had a very smelly petroleum/chemical smell. I smelled the stuff for six months in my garage.
CallMeAl Par4QC Not gonna happen. 2 car garage with my Mustang and the Mrs 2023 Mazda. I do keep a cover over it, just looking for a little protection underneath.
jsippy73 KCee The kinds that build up and fall off in pieces make things way worse. Oiling every year helps a lot. Hard to do yourself unless you have ramps and an airless sprayer with hoses and just the spay gun attached.
KCee jsippy73 I agree. Oil and grease are always helpful, but technically not an undercoating. Maybe there is some newer stuff that's better. My brother has been a mechanic forever and he felt undercoatings were not worth it.
KCee jsippy73 ruled? He must not live in the salt belt? ??? We live in New England. It used to snow here and they would put salt on the roads. Now we golf year round lol
