It would be a shame if his disqualification is solely based on his academic performance.
However, should he missed team practice or not able to perform as demanded then, it's fair.

I had always told my own kids , know where they are and their goal. While at school, the goal is to learn and advance to their next goal. But many are flipping the priority , school is just another stepping stone to other goals in life, mainly, make as much money as possible, not what they love to do in life.

It's hard to understand how this could have fallen through the cracks. I would think that his coach, guidance counselor or his parents would have checked or been aware that by taking mostly college courses and not being a full time HS student would have made him ineligible to play HS golf, if that's the reason he can't play. It makes one wonder if more states have similar rules.

Good for him. He'll probably make more money serving a very worthwhile purpose, whilst focusing on his academics, than he otherwise would focusing on his athletics.

It's called CYA. Instead of applying reason and common sense to each situation that comes up, you abandon the need by writing "no tolerance" rules. That way, no one has to accept any responsibility for making a decision.

Unfortunately, the more I had learned about the culture of higher management, the more I was disappointed of how things are at the top tear management.
It's basically CYA to maintain in their seats so they could collect their bonuses and retirement, they do not CARE.

As in this case for the high school golfer, I believe if he maintain his status with the golf team, why couln't he take advantage of enrolling in classes in college at the same time ?
A lot of high school kids do so, to get a head start in higher education, to lessen the burden of paying for the higher education..... The USGA and the State affiliate should take a second look, to consider this issue in today's environment.

Maybe I'm just crabby but I read it as sour grapes. Person doesn't like rule and complains. The rule may need to be changed, who knows.

Or maybe the kid could take basket weaving at the high school to comply with their rule and still play.

We are in the age of discontent.
Everyone wish to break down the tradition, to rebel, have a revolution just for the heck of it. No time to follow rules..... Not as extreme as the terrorists act, but we are to a point needing house cleaning.

I'd bet the state requirements say the athletes must be full time students. Taking only 1 course will not meet that requirement. And they will not change for 1 person nor should they give him exception....he is a college student. And as such, why did he not try to get on the college team, if they have one?

We had a cheerleader fulfill graduation requirements by Jan. of the school year. At that point she enrolled in college and had to be dropped from the squad. She graduated with our class in May of that senior year. This was 47 yrs. ago, so nothing changes, I guess. Rules are rules, as written & enforced. As they should be. Change them for one, never.

I have no idea what kind of program they have but this is what we have in our State.
Both my kids did not use this because they were taking A.P. classes from High School.
However, many of my friends kids took advantage of this Running Start Program to have college credit so they could graduate on time or sooner.

Running Start. Running Start is a program that allows 11th and 12th grade students to take college courses at Washington's 34 community and technical colleges. Students earn both high school and college credits for these courses. Running Start students and their families do not pay tuition.

I was a competitive swimmer in HS and college. After my 10th grade year, I stayed in shape in the summer by swimming in AAU events. My last summer AAU event was in September after the 1st day of HS for 11th grade. I was not aware that there was a VA HS rule that stated I could not compete in AAU events after school started, making me ineligible for my 11th grade year. The weird thing is I only discovered the rule when someone from the AAU system, (from another HS) turned me in. At this point my 11th grade swimming season was well under way. I was informed that all my past swims for my 11th grade season were nullified and I could not finish the season. They had to go back and recalculate the scores for those meets. Cluster Fuck. My coach was unaware of the rule as well. Not even sure what purpose the rule served. In retrospect, I would have wished I had more resources to learn of these obscure rules. I swam my senior year and landed a scholarship to swim at Old Dominion University, so for me it worked out. Just an anecdote.

How about this perspective. All High Schools belong to their State's Athletic Charters ... bar none.

All HS Athletes sign a form through their parents permission, allowing to and conforming to, that State's Athletic requirements. The young man AND his parents agreed to and consented to the State Athletic requirements.

Does it seem that the young man is being penalized for his achievement as to his Academic pursuit. No.

Is he being penalized as to his Athletic pursuit in his High School pursuits. No.

He and His Parents Authorized it by signing the participation form "required" by the state.

This and Only This needs to be corrected ... or does it? How much further dumb down do we allow before parental and individual responsibility takes precedence? JMO

Never heard of/read about any school where 1 course is accepted as the minimum.

Not a big deal, really, except the fact that some want to make it be that. The kid was/is doing the right thing, as are the parents(except all the bitching/troublemaking). The education is always paramount to athletics; at least it should be.

Cry babies fuss over their "rights" which they never were granted in the first place. I started laughing when I see parades and strikes over "rights" these days. No one wants to play by the rules. Rules are important, rules and laws are what made us who we are. Same as in golf and same goes in life.

Are we really that bored and mentally being pushed to the edge of sanity ?
