Chi Chi Rodriguez dies at age 88

Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez, an eight-time PGA Tour winner and one of the most charismatic and beloved figures in pro golf, has died at age 88.

Rodriguez’s death was first announced by Carmelo Javier Rios, a member of the Senate in Puerto Rico. The cause of death has not yet been named. His death was also reported on the Puerto Rico Golf Association website.

I was surprised to see it was not more than that. He was VERY popular and well-known. I see he did win 22 times on the Senior Tour, with 2 majors. One of those guys that always smiled, and made others smile.

Played Chi Chi’s course / youth foundation a few times in Clearwater Fl..

Heard a funny story on PGA Tour Radio. Years ago PGA Tour’s Dave Marr was in a hotel lobby with his two kids (Dave and Tony). ChiChi walked in and went up to talk to Marr’s two sons.

Asked the young Dave to hold up his hand and looked at it and said he’d be a good golfer. Then asked the younger Tony to hold up his hand. Chi Chi said that Tony should play the piano. 😂

I saw him play a few times at Silverado in Napa, he was always entertaining.

I used to hang out a bit in the clubhouse with the guy that used to be the pro at Province Lake Golf Club. He told me at one Chi Chi came to the course and the opportunity was there for people to walk with him while he played golf and told stories and talked. One of the lines he quoted was ,"Only in America could a guy like me have a white candy". The guy was an icon and will be missed..he certainly left his mark.
