Seeing the comments about courses not offering a sufficient range of tees to accommodate short hitters, and thinking that most courses in the US are a lot better served than here in the UK - my home course is pretty typical in that the shortest set of tees available is only about 500 yards shorter than the competition tees (5,800 compared to 6,300, although the ladies do play the course from those short tees as a par 73 with 5 par 5 holes rather than the par 68 with no 5s for men). There are a lot of older members who get plenty of use out of their 3-wood...

There is nothing to stop people from teeing up in the fairway. Courses aren’t going to add tee boxes for a handful of people who will play them. Same with junior tees.

When I used to take the kids out they would tee off from the 150 yard markers. That’s all people have to do. Agree to play all the par 4’s at 250 and the par 5’s at 300. Use the range finder and tee up from there.. If I saw someone smart enough to do that I’d kiss them on the lips.

Then quit complaining about how long people take to play!!!

Courses would be better served, and so would ALL golfers, if they would remake all tee areas to be 40 yds. ahead of where they are now.

I do laugh at all of this being written.
We have an 'executive' course that is around 5000 yds. from the 'tips', Par 66. It has 6 Par 3 holes and only 1 Par 5.
People take 2 shots to hit the Par 3s, and 2-?? to hit the Par 4s. Even on days I've played my best, I could never break 70. And I never played the tips.

Carry on though. People will play where they want to and it won't matter if they'd move up. They'll still play like crap because they are now using different clubs.

sdandrea1 I agree, I always tell my wife she is playing a harder course than I am. When I play the senior tees they are often on the same tee box as the women's with maybe 10 yards separating them. It's ridiculous. And my wife is a fairly long hitter for a 64 year old woman playing a short (43") driver. She hit one 210 the other day but most are now in the 180 range and mishits are of course less. Front tees should be well under 5000 yards imo

I believe most won't tee off forward on a course is the inability to find some short-mown flat area and the stigma attached to not hitting from a tee box. If one isn't keeping a hdcp I see no reason why one wouldn't just play from wherever they are comfortable. Most courses could mow a small tee area Foward tee juniors and all shorter players without much maintenance but getting folks in charge to make these changes isn't easy getting past the.........(well we have it done it this way forever and we aren't changing.) 😉

I know if I owned a golf course I would have a tee box in the 4000 yard range. My wife and I played a great course last week, we played the front 9 in 90 minutes and the back in 2 and a half hours. We caught up to two foursomes of women on the 13th hole and it was a slog the rest of the way. The red tees were 5151 yards. These women were taking 5-6 shots to get to the green, I don't know how that could be fun. At 4000 yards that would eliminate at least 1 shot per hole, maybe more. A 250 yard par 4 would be plenty for these ladies.

BTW par is a goofy term in golf and par being the score standard for each hole of a golf course. Who says one should shoot par on any given hole unless they are pro, very low hdcp and high skill level golfers? It's the old standards that folks just can't get around in their mind. Most folks can't shoot the standard/par on a 9 or 18 so why try...call it something else. If you are a bogey golfer on average your par on 9 is 45 not 36....you get my drift. 😉

So if you embrace your skill level and then play from whatever tee you want. That takes all of this into account.

It's why I play impact golf for the most part on most shots and don't worry about score. ☺

It’s the “play the whole course “ mentality. We have senior tees and less than a handful play them. They claim the tees are too close to the ladies tees🙄. Thank God we didn’t waste the money making a separate tee box.

Like I said, just get your group to agree to tee up from 250 yards out in the fairway and play from there…. Pretend it’s a tee box🙄… who cares.

You can't have handicapped matches from there that's the problem, Same for the women's tees if they're not also rated for men. You'd be fine if everyone is playing from there and you could just use the forward tees ratings but if it's a mixed tee comp, no bueno.

It’s also a touchy situation with women and I don’t even bother saying anything to seniors. The red tees and senior tees on our first hole are 80 yards ahead of the whites and a little to the left. You really can’t see them. So I see women on the mens tee with the husbands and I don’t want to say anything because there is a good chance they are better than their husbands. I do say to them, “ I don’t know what tees you normally play but if you play the red tees they are further up to the left before the bridge.”

Our club just completed (mostly) a renovation of irrigation and TEE BOXES. Yardages are:

Green = 4235
Red = 5050
Gold = 5448
White = 6258
Blue = 6748
Black = 6962

There are also combo tees of Red/Green (4716) and Gold/White (5767).

Members love the new set up as well as NEW tee boxes. 🏌

And they're all rated? That's the way to do it at little to no cost, combo tees. If you're not playing for handicap you can just make your own combo tees and have fun with it. Play a par 3 from the tips where every one needs driver and then one from the forward where everyone hits a wedge or half wedge and so on.

garyt1957 They are all rated, but only two of them are indicated on the scorecard, by circles around the hole yardage that applies to the combo. I’ve seen a scorecard that indicated all of the combos and it was cleaner than you’d think.

I can’t find the picture I took of that card. It used small up or down arrows at each hole column, on the divider line between the tee colors.

Yeah, it only costs a small rating fee.

Yes, all our tees including combo tees are rated and you can play any of them with the appropriate handicap…. Even if you are a +6 from the up tees. 🥴
