Simple hypothesis... He's 95. Had a heart attack or stroke and died. Wife finds him dead, becomes despondent, can't imagine living without him, offs herself with pills.
Poor dog is stuck in the kennel, so dies because it has no access to food and water.
Could potentially be the opposite... Wife is suicidal, offs herself. He finds her, freaks out, is rushing to find his phone, trips and falls, breaking his hip, or has heart attack or stroke from stress. Dog's situation is the same either way, trapped.
