Garage Door Openers

I'm getting hints that my old Wayne Dalton I-Drive Torquemaster unit is going senile. 🙄

The remotes work but the main base unit won't and refuses reprogramming and rebooting.
i'll use the remotes for a while, but.... am I missing anything and, any recommendations on what might be some of the better openers on the market today ?

This Wayne Dalton I-Drive was great, but now .....

I'm kind of going through the same thing too.....
I'll probably convert from overhead to a wall mount unit also,
they're more $$ but make way more sense as far quietness,power and less
things to break or go wrong.
Plus it opens up the center of the garage ceiling.

darpar I've been looking at this type as well. Probably wait for our current opener to die, but I wouldn't mind freeing up the overhead space so I can more easily hit balls in the garage in the winter.

Cool, had not heard of the wall mounts before. Our garage doors are due for replacement within the next year, and we'll be replacing the openers as well.

I’m reading that DC belt drives are top line with all the bells & whistles. 🤔

I had an Overhead Door belt drive opener for about 12 years. Super quiet and never had an issue until the opener started having some occasional brain farts. Never an issue with the motor or belt. I called Overhead and they came by and took a look. He told me the electronics were just getting old and may last a year or croak tomorrow. He had a new one on the truck and replaced it and the belt drive. All of the control buttons are easier to get to as well as access to the light bulb. Service from Overheaddoor has been top notch over the years.

While there I mentioned to the tech that the door which as also an OHD installation was not as quiet as it used to be and made a lot of popping noises in transit. He lubed all of the rollers and hinges no charge and manually pushed the door back and forth sideways. He told me that lubing the roller stems was important as they are designed to have some lateral movement in transit. I hadn't been lubing the stems and after he did that the door was much quieter.

That's one of the MANY cool features of the wall mounts,makes it pretty hard for someone
to just lift your door from the outside and break in.
Plus you can get them with a battery backup in case the power goes out, and a cell phone app.
so you can see if you remembered to close the door when you're away, etc.

Getting ready to order the Genie wall mount from Amzn shortly.....

Par4QC I hope that system has good failsafe for that dead bolt. If the opener engages with the bolt still in it will totally mangle the door. 😵

I've had a LiftMaster garage door opener now for 5-6 years. It's great. It's quiet.

Rickochet As much as I know about garage door openers, it shouldn't, if the auto retract works as it should. Mine is a cheapy, but it retracts as soon as it hits something. (I had the neighborhood kids lie down to test it.🤣)

I have a really old model of Overhead Door. The spring has broken twice over the 22 years I've lived in my home. It was there for years prior to us buying the house. The big coiled spring broke twice in that time. The repairman said that was pretty good and the motor that works the door is a good one they don't make anymore.

I just watched the install video for the wall mount Genie. Looks like a pretty easy job. Since we did not buy an opener from our builder (price was stupid), I know what I'm getting.
