I've tried, but I don't think about the shoulders....what I do try to visualize is turning the breastbone or sternum back and through while keeping the butt of the club pointing right at it (the sternum). When that doesn't work right, I tend to pull shots, but when it IS working, I hit it pretty straight. Playing the ball a bit further back, towards the middle of the stance helps. For some reason trying to think about the shoulders has never worked for me.....
I notice JV plays from a very closed stance. Maybe that's how he keeps the shoulders 'closed.' But. when I have tried closed stances, I tend to come over the top eventually.
