I am honestly not 100% sure. My friend who signed him for Srixon has a pat statement whenever I ask him why a player is struggling - "golf is hard". He has some other comments too that I won't share 🙂
Smiley had a great run, made a ton of $ in endorsements. He did not have a dominant college golf career. But he went pro, won on the Web.com to get his PGA Tour card. Then he won in Las Vegas his rookie year, maybe his first start as a PGA Tour member. I remember playing a few holes with him that winter, thinking 'I am playing with a PGA Tour winner', as opposed to my son's buddy. He then played in the last group in the Masters that year. Then the bottom fell out. He switched swing coaches a bunch. Lost his card, couldn't make a dent overseas. But he found a great spot. He is a 100% natural announcer. Great kid, very personable, comes across on TV.
