So when do you guys decide it’s time for new wedges. And how do you decide? I don’t mean, because I saw a cheap one somewhere… I mean actually what makes you say to yourself,” I need new wedges”.
I’ll add my recent experience after some replies.
If you aren't holing out every shot when you miss GIR then your wedge game can obviously be improved.
....when it develops a quarter sized spot in the face and the spin goes away....or it gets ugly and hates me. 
I never "replace" wedges. I added a set of cavity back wedges that can be a tad more forgiven and added a set of forged wedges that definitely impart more spin. The first 2 sets are cast and will probably last forever.
When I get new irons that keep having the lofts jacked more and more. Then I have to get new wedges since the gapping is wrong. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
I must have 4 or 5 sets of wedges lying around here.
Whenever I get the urge. Started last season with 5 wedge sets and ended the year with 3.
Par4QC Eguller My brother once had a wedge with no scorelines, none. That thing would back a ball up across the green. And it did not have anything but a smooth face.

I put my OG PM grind wedges in Nicks bag with my Pings. I put brand new wedges in my bag. The PM grind we’re 2015 maybe? And they have a worn spot in the middle. When I run my fingernail in the grooves on the pm grind amd the new wedge… you can feel the difference.
Today I used the GC Quad to measure the spin etc… on both 60 degree wedges for 60 and 85-90 yard shots. There was a little over 100 rpm difference. Ball speed, launch, peak height… all exactly with same. Carry and total yards differential was the same.
So do people replace wedges because someone SAID you have to after a season or 2? Does anyone actually ever test their current wedge vs a new one? Because I mostly hit wedges… if anyone should have worn out wedges it’s me and these old ones perform like new ones.
Typhoon when they stop working or others come on sale. Have many still in plastic and waiting for PapaD to ops check the COSTCO wedges. Hell, donated two in plastic for one of the Majors contests here.
Typhoon The best wedge I've ever had, still have, is from an old set of Firesole clones, which I also still have. I can, or could, do drop/stop with that thing from 10'-20 yds., giving it a full swing each time (choke down from 10', of course). One day I noticed the face looked darker than it should. Flat grooves, dead center. Still works as always.

Typhoon Since pilots are recognized as never being the problem, they do stop working occasionally and need to be brought back to operational status by getting new ones and setting them by the bad actors. Everybody knows this, and should not be surprised.

I've only replaced one wedge in my life due to wear. My original sand wedge was a cast cavity back and after 20 years of play the distance control on full swings was getting noticeably looser. Didn't have a wear spot on it, but I presumed that the grooves were not biting as much. When I replaced it with an SMT Durometer, the distance control came back, but the overall distance was quite a bit shorter even though both were the same length and marked (never actually measured the loft on either) as 56 degrees. Had to go buy a gap wedge to fill the gap. Ended up having to replace the Durometer because I left it on the course one day, not due to wear. 
I need to find an old wedge, polish up a shiny spot in the center with my dremel tool, and carry it around in my bag so everyone will know I'm a playa.

It makes my laugh when I read about tour pros changing out their wedges every couple weeks so the grooves stay sharp. Just goes to show you how little they actually know about their equipment. To them it’s just a job. Like a Walmart employee.

Long story, but I haven't had a chance to try it very much at all. I hope to give it a good go when
we get back home in early March - hope our bunkers are decent by then. Thanks again for letting

I use up all the good shots in my wedges after 3 rounds. Then it usually takes me 3 rounds to figure out that all the good shots have been used. So.....every 6 rounds.
When someone released a useable CB one vs the Blade one that I used to take pelts with regularly.
I think it made me say I needed to try one and have been using the Cleveland CBX2 since they modified the sole grinds on the various lofts. Haven't felt the need to try the Zipcores.
I get a new wedge anytime I hit out of a bunker.
Probably every 3 years.
I've been golfing 27 years and I think I'm on my 4th set of wedges. I could change most clubs constantly but not a wedge. My LW is looking pretty beat up but Cally discontinued the wide sole low bounce 60 so it's staying put.
pellmell Not that I don’t believe a magazine that makes their money off of doing “positive” tests for buying new equipment… but…
I also sell equipment but not in the same vein. I tell the truth. If I remember, I’ll do the test again on the GCQuad and post the numbers. Again, I sell equipment and I’m telling you there was not discernible difference.
Typhoon Plus, who did they get for testing? Any club test should be from a 15 'cap player.(s) And if a 15 'cap can hit wedges to perform as they should, repeatedly, or well enough that tests show new grooves to be much better than old, then that is the reason they are at 15 still......it's the only club they can hit properly. Otherwise, bullshit with any club tests.
