Getting ready to buy a Duromax XP10000E generator.

DC300 Brand wise, I have no real advice, just be aware, you don’t really want your finer equipment running on the “dirty” wave pattern a cheap generator puts off so if you are big into higher end electronics/smart home stuff, you should try to seek out a higher end generator that Is closer in frequency to your typical home electricity. This is where the inverters are great their wave form is nice and clean, but they are also expensive and typically small output.

And in the quick review of the Duromax XP10000E, it is not very clean power. THD rating is 12%-20% depending on load applied. That's not very clean.

SVonhof that’s exceptionally ugly, I wouldn’t buy it based on that tbh. Fine for a power tool, but I’m not going to let it blow up my HVAC or Refrigerator over a couple of hundred bucks in difference and I’m not a guy with much (if any) “smart” products in my house. 3-5% is normal, over 10%… nah I’ll try another.

I have a Briggs & Stratton Q6500 inverter generator, 6500 peak watts & 5000 running watts capacity and, fortunately, I haven't had to use it yet. I liked the inverter feature so it would be gentle with electronics. I know it won't power the entire house (not by a long shot) but I intend to hire an electrician to set it up so it'll backfeed my electrical panel & I can selectively choose what to power-up in an outage.

I was thinking the same thing. I have not done much research yet, but I would not want to "go cheap" and have my work computer and monitor get fried, that would be $7k to replace.

Darren, this is the one my BIL “gave🙄🙄” us 5 years ago. I had a panel put in so I could plug this into it and turn on what I want to power. Is this one any good? I seriously know less about these than Papa D knows about his launch monitor numbers. I used it before to run the heating system, fridge and some lights before.

When my 1998 coleman finally failed I picked up a Champion and I didn't have a ton of faith it it with the plastic levers and such, but that little thing has saved our ass about 15 times since I purchased it. I actually looked at Champion products before deciding on the Duramax (durostar/Westinghouse...same generator), but it would have been about $350 more for a similar feature set while still a MIC unit. My father has a 7500 rated unit. He loves it. I just didn't feel like shelling out $2k for a portable or $4k for a smaller stand by for the 4 or 5 times a year that I need it. Harbor Freight sells a ton of predator generators, which looks like a Honda clone. If I get 5 or 6 years out of the one I purchased I'll just buy another. I think I'm on year 5 with the champion. If you buy a $5k honda you better chain it down in Mass!

Typhoon it’s not bad, but still not going to be super clean power. Portables should be considered an emergency use product, for the limited time you will need it, likely fine.

Fairly certain most Honda brand generators have AVR built into the system. You’ll pay through the nose for a Honda though.

colej That's a nice one (onan). I'm surprised it doesn't have a 50amp port though, but if your using a medium size transfer switch you're good to go.

I like the idea of dual fuel as well. You run it on propane and it’ll run sweet with little to zero maintenance.

colej You might lose a little power on propane, but not enough to make a real difference. I decided to forgo dual fuel. I don't have anything else that runs propane except for my gas grille and I haven't used that since purchasing my pellet fired smoker/grille.

I had an Onan 6500 or 7500. It was a built in China motor, a Honda clone I think. Actually I still have it but it's in my brother's building in Illinois and I don't expect to ask for it back. It ran fine. It had the usual Chinese poor quality plastics and rubber but it's still ready to run. It was easy to drain the gas and carb between uses so that helps a lot. It was the one I referred to earlier than ran our well pump and all the essentials.

Back when I got it 20 years ago, it was a Costco deal for $500 ish.

Typhoon Yes, just messing with you. I have nothing bad to say about Champion stuff. My first generator lasted 25 years, but it was a Briggs and Stratton motor. I have no idea what these motors are. I break them in right and use synthetic oil after break in, but when the power goes out they get used hard....long hours. Any where in town last weekend all you heard were generators for 3 to 5 days straight..24 hours a day. I figure anything after 5 years is a bonus.

DC300 I don’t live where Tim lives, he’s got the bad weather and big outages up there. I got a friend in NH whose house is sort of in the woods and last week or so lost power for a few days. Where I live we lose power rarely and it’s usually back on in less than 12 hours. A portable works fine for me.

Typhoon There are a lot of homes up here with stand by generators, but at that point your looking at $6k - $10 and a propane account (if your don't have one). I lose power about 5 - 10 times a year, whether it's a heavy snow or wind situation or auto accident. We did lose power 3 times this summer which was odd....I think portable is the best way/most versatile way honestly. I used my old portable a bit when I was installing floors in this house before we had power and I was able to loan it to my sister in law to take to their camp when they had an outage.
