Can you make any putter into an arm lock putter? Or does it have to be a specific type of head?

You pretty much can, only way to putt! IMO 😉
I've made a couple from old putters I had sitting around.
What seems to work/is needed....about 7-8° loft because of the extreme forward shaft lean angle.
Total length 39-41(depends on how tall you are) and a 17" long grip.
At address the butt end of the putter shaft can't go past your lead arm elbow joint.
Mine are mallet heads of at least 360 grms (the heavier the better)
and the center shafted/face balanced one seems to work the best.
On short 3-4' putts, the arm lock method is easy to adapt to, longer say 20-30' putts feel a little
awkward at first, and takes some getting used too.

I know it has to have a certain loft but can't remember if it's more or less than standard

I would think the weight of the head too with the shaft being longer and the weird grip. I don’t think you could use just any putter head.

I think the style Kuchar popularized needed more loft and a relatively heavy head IIRC. With the new reverse arm lock I don't think you need more loft.

According to Aaron's Value Golf Offerings:

Lead Arm Lock Putter usually 7* loft
Reverse AL Putter usually 0* loft

Assuming you can get your traditional putters to these lofts and enough weight in the putters to be comfortable with the increased length, I think your good to go. Perhaps a Heavy Weight Putter Shaft or Back Weights may help out.

The best thing is to use 'old' belly putter heads for weight and adjust for loft.

I wasn't even thinking about loft. I was more thinking of whether or not a plumber's neck would work, or a goose neck, or straight/center shaft or triple bend.
