Just interested to hear your thoughts on this. I don't hit the ball far enough to have many chances for a 3-putt par, but when I was on vacation and playing golf with my father I managed to get on the back of the green with a driver followed by a three hybrid. Granted I was probably 50 feet from the pin, which was on the front part of the green. I was also using a crappy old putter with a ton of offset. I rolled the first putt up to about 7 feet and missed the birdie.
That got me to thinking, and it turns out that 4 of the last 5 times I have putted flr eagle, I ended up with a 3-putt par, despite that fact that I almost never three-putt. Very frustrating.
The best look at eagle I had in recent years was about six years ago. My 3-wood stopped about 14 feet from the hole. I really wanted the eagle, so I blasted the putt high and about 5 feet long, then missed the birdie putt coming back. On two other occasions I actually nestled long eagle putts pretty close to the hole but then missed the birdie putt. In one case it was at least a quick putt with a fair bit of break in it, so it was hard to tell whether to aim outside the cup and let it break into the hole or to try to hit it hard enough to take the break out of it. In the other case, though, I was left with nothing more than a relatively straight 3- or 4-footer but somehow I managed to miss it left. That one stung.
How about you guys? Ever had a three-putt par before? Any that were annoyingly bad or that you clearly remember? Anybody else utterly waste 80% of their last 5 chances at eagle?
