Any slower swingers benefit from going to a low spin driver?

So the title is my question. Have any of you guys who aren't swinging the driver fast, say 85-90mph, ever benefitted from going to a low spin driver? Maybe...

I believe they aren't perfect and at 90 compression harder ie range ball feel so many don't think like they are catching them well and the sound/feel equation makes one think they are not performing well but I have found otherwise myself. On average summer drives now 90 compression balls fly a lot further than soft lower compression balls. In spring cooler weather maybe not so much. My experience.

I usually find that the numbers say that lower spin helps but not as much as high launch with normal spin.

I've observed here on hard fairways that lower flights are better than higher spinnier flights. To a point, obviously.

DonM As club head speed with AofA and tee height climbs lower spin makes sense.

IF one doesn't have correct AofA with launch angle/tee height and lower club head speed then more loft and a bit more spin makes sense. That's fitting IMO but majority of 1/2 hour so called fitting discount store marketing never find that out.

A lot changes when dry summer golf and dry fairways vs. watered slow turf.

Here are 4 scenarios for me. I’m guessing at the inputs but the results seem right.

My typical lower drive on a medium fairway.
Same drive on a hard fairway. These are about the carry and roll I get here. Sometimes I get even more roll.
Increase to 15 launch with no increase in spin (a low spin driver?). Nice gain in carry, not much in total. Surprised.
Same but with more spin. This is more realistic for me vs #3.

So lower is better unless I get something high out of a low spin head.

DonM Yep Don is 2 yards worth worrying so much about? I'd bet your higher LA 15 deg. with less roll out equates to more fairways hit? Maybe now in TX with dry fairways is what to factor more into?

IMO guys that worry so much about spin etc etc need to be above 100 mph until you get there don't worry so much about it. 😊

I just re-ran #2 and 4 on a soft fairway. The high spinny one wins by 10 yards carry and 5 total. Gary is it possible that you spin the crap out of the ball? Like 4000 rpm?

scotts33 I do think the higher launching higher spinning driver is more accurate. My longest drives peak at only 40-50 feet, though. That’s from experience. I just ran more numbers and they show the same thing. Even for downwind. Love the dry fairways!

Impact stickers on the face at the very least. Impact location can greatly effect spin.

garyt1957 Gary, try to find a place doing a Taylormade fitting/demo. We use Trackman. Bring your own driver too. Ask questions… ask what your clubhead speed, ball speed, AOA, peak height are. Ask if they can email you the results of your driver amd what they recommend. Our software has that capability.

DonM I could never estimate height in feet by eye balling it. Definitely lower than younger guys who hit it farther

I laugh when people want to get fit for a whole bag in a half hour. These people are just clueless… don’t know what they are thinking. They want driver, fw, hybrid, irons. I end up doing irons and driver and just ask them about fw and hybrid. Or I send them off to the side to hit those on their own.

We can get a decent fit on driver and irons in a half hour. We also only fit using a 7 iron for irons so that cuts down time. If they want to split hairs over 2 yards I tell them It’s a longer process and that fitting would take hours, not 30 minutes.

Gary though can get what he is looking for in that time for free.

What’s amazing is in that half hour 75% of the people buy. I put the orders in…and it’s thousands of dollars! They obviously get what they want. We show them the results with their clubs and everything they hit so they can decide.

colej Interesting charts. It looks like low on the face is actually better than high on the face for slower swingers. Very surprised at that. I thought today's drivers were meant to be hit a bit above center? I also thought a negative angle of attack would result in lower face contact but hey seem to say the opposite?
