I don't mind generally rough conditions, but I do detest losing a golf ball in rough that is not far off the fairway or green. One of my favorite layouts was a city course near the airport that had patchy fairways, clover in the rough, and hardpan all over the place. But, it had a good variety of holes and there wasn't much bunkering, water, or trees to protect the course in other ways. They didn't take good care of it, but at least it was mowed to the point where I could almost always find the ball. Unfortunately, the city decided to make the area a security buffer zone after 9/11 and the course is long gone.
