I didn't realize how many mature wily veterans of the game of golf were on this site. I know there are a few but this many is good to see! 👍
190 yard maybe roll out to 200 with a 43.50" 195 cc persimmon wood, driver club head speed with same driver 84 mph. From time to time I try metal and at 45" around 88 a few more yards but instead of 90% in the fairway that drops to 70% maybe. When a senior drops that far off line the distance is the same when you can hit it straight. Persimmon heads have gear effect and I rarely miss a fairway on narrow fairway courses not wide open. Plus the sound persimmon makes vs. metal. That's the reality of one that has been a clubmaker since the early 80's. Back then clubmaking was an art now it's not. I understand the fitting factors but for seniors that still have some semblance of game and average to decent hand eye you don't need 460cc driver heads to make decent passes and send ball down fairway. Metal fairways are basically the same size of any wooden fairway head.
On average, now I carry a Louisville Smart Probe 2 10.5 deg, driver and 21 deg. 5 wood, Stan Thompson Ginty 6 wood 26 deg., various irons from blades to medium CB's 4i, 7i, PW and SW and my best putter is a Louisville Elmore Just persimmon mallet. For seniors the game of golf is get off the tee straight using appropriate tee box for your tee ball distance (Gold), keep it in the fairway with a trusty fairway wood for 2nd shots, rely on short pitching and a great chipping game with good putting and you will score the same as you did from the old days. This is why I don't need a full set of irons as I would not use many of them, Mid iron, short iron a wedge or two. Golf can be as good now as it was in the 60's and in many ways better. Enjoy the walk and the good shots fellas!
