Trying to understand the relationship between clubhead speed and the loft gaps and expected distance separatiion.

Read something awhile back but can't recall it or find anything on it now. This has to do with minimalist club selection based on skill

Anyone have some info?

From Tom Wishon.....this is what I use for fitting/build out. I should add in fitting take into account transition time and release (early-mid-late) for shaft profile and shaft weight.

These are the mid iron club head speeds…..

mid iron speed over 72 mph – 4* increments (average player)

mid iron speed 60-72 – 5* increments (some seniors and some ladies)

mid iron speed under 60mph – 6* increments (seniors and ladies)

You can make an argument to say that over 85mph you could go with 3* increments but you never do because that will leave you with a very odd set makeup. So over 72mph you stay with 4* and just live with the fact the distance gaps will increase to 15 yds or more as speed keeps going up from 85 with the mid iron.

Think about all these factors when you play golf and possibly why your distance gaps are off and you wonder why. 😁

My driver SS is in the 80s. My normal (also minimalist) is HUGE gaps in the top of the bag and more like 8 to 10 degrees lower in the bag. My current lofts are:

    10.5, 21, 31, 39, 47, 57, putter
    (Driver, utility, 6h, 8i, W, SW, putter)

You've forgotten the biggest factor.....no none, but no one, is going to swing the same speeds club-club. You will get a 5 yd. gap, then you may get a 20 yd. gap.

This discussion is moot, and is not relevant for anyone with a handicap over 0. IOW, if you are a Pro, read on, discuss. Enjoy. πŸ˜‰

Who here really knows their lofts? I don't as I 🀞they are on spec or close when sent to me!

I do and anything I build they know. Plus I check loft/lie on clients as a follow up.

To OP Martee have you played evens and odds?

scotts33 Even only Irons, its because I rely heavily on the 8 iron and PW for 90% of my short game. I have swapped out the 6 iron for the 5 iron at times or gone with a 5 hybrid.
Guess you would say I am a mixed bag.....

I wonder if the club influences what is optimal. For example, I can more effectively "take off something" on 8 iron on up, whereas that is much harder with 5 and 6 . So i would think it would be easier to tolerate bigger gaps (5*) in 8-LW?
