So, here in Oklahoma we have a river that is spring fed and cold during winter. The state wildlife department stocks it with trout every winter. It is a beautiful river with water falls and clear water, I enjoy going just for the scenery.

Anyway, I asked my wife for a cheap fly fishing rod for Christmas to give it a try. I was unsuccessful the first trip out, but have a few more flies to try on a trip I'm taking tomorrow.

Any trout/fly fisherman here? What are your tricks and tips for a beginner with the fly rod? I saw a guy doing a roll cast that looked pretty simple. May watch some youtube tutorials and try that out tomorrow. I can easily catch my limit with Powerbait dough, but that just isn't as fun as actually casting!

I love to fish for trout but I don't fly fish. I use bait and float it up from the bottom about 12"-18".

Dufferman I have never tried, only seen it online or in a movie. looks interesting.
      Good luck tomorrow!

Yeah, powerbait floating off the bottom and spinner baits are typically what I use.

Have seen guys catch them on small rapala style hard baits as well.

I will be taking regular fishing gear as well if the fly fishing isn't working. First time out, I did have a fish chasing my fly as I reeled it back in. I just think the fight on a fly rod/reel will be really fun!

Thanks, taking my 11 year old boy with me. Going to have a little cook out for lunch. If you promise him good food, he will do just about anything!

I've fly & spin fished since I was a kid. Once you get the hang of it, you will love it. It is a chess game
between you and the trout whether it be dry fly, nymph or wet fly.

The best advice I can give is to read the famous books, YouTube, and practice - 'dig it out of the dirt' (water).
Careful though, it can become an obsession. 🎣

Eguller I just started fly fishing this summer. I always thought the β€˜zen’ aspect was silly and it was boring. Wow, was I wrong. Been fishing our local ponds and streams, so much fun.

Cool. Dry fly fishing, I believe, will improve your golf swing - at least your tempo.

Well, was shut out today, just not much action for some reason. Normally I will see fish hitting on top but today I think I only saw one small fish break the surface.

Did get some fly fishing practice. I still am not very good, but worked on a little roll type cast that was more consistent than the overhand casting.

Hopefully next time I go out the fish will be a little more hungry. Not sure if like bass, but we just had a cold front move through two days ago and today it is up in the 60's.

Eguller Careful though, it can become an obsession.

"Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will spend a fortune at Bass Pro." 😜
